Dear Parents / Guardians,                                                                                        May 1, 2009

All sophomores will take part in the in the Mathematics MCAS on May 19th and 20th, as well as the Science MCAS on June 4th and 5th.   All students must participate in the testing.  Successful completion of both exams is necessary for a student to be awarded their Competency Determination (CD), which is required to graduate.  In addition to passing the exams, any student whose scores do not indicate proficiency must meet the additional requirements of an Education Proficiency Plan in order to be awarded their CD. Sophomore parents should ensure that their children are in school, well rested, and ready to perform when testing begins.  If there is an unavoidable conflict with either testing day, parents should call the guidance office immediately.

Broadway 2009, Hull High School Theatre Arts’ Annual Trip to Broadway will take place May 15 – 17.  Highlights of this year’s trip include performances of West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Shrek the Musical and Billy Elliott; workshops with members of the cast of Shrek the Musical and Billy Elliott; a visit to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum; Friday night dinner at Forlini’s where the Directors of Broadway Classroom and possibly surprise guests will dine with the Hull Theatre Group; and the Annual Scavenger Hunt.  We are currently awaiting approval of a “talk-back” session (when members of the cast meet with the students after the production to answer questions) with at least one of the casts.

Seussical, Jr., the musical adventures of the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Jojo and many of the other Seuss characters will be this year’s annual children’s theatre production.  Students of the Jacobs School will be the guests of Hull High School Theatre Arts on Friday, May 29th for two private performances of Seussical, Jr.  Public performances will be Friday, May 29th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 30th at 1:30 p.m.  Immediately after the public performances the audience is invited to the cafeteria to meet with the Seuss characters.  (You may bring a camera to take pictures of your child with his or her favorite character.)  Tickets go on sale to the public the second week in May.  Please call Mr. Doniger at 781-925-8001 for further information.

For the second year in a row Hull students won top prizes in the New England Patriot’s “Write On” essay contest.  The grand prize award of a $20,000 scholarship went to Mikia Manley.  Monica McCall won the third place grand prize of a $5,000 scholarship.  Over the past three years, Hull students in Mr. Fuller’s AP English and Honors 9 English classes have won a total of $117,500 in scholarship awards.  Other winners this year include Juniors: Erin Hulverson, Kyle Wholley, Lauryn Kiander, and Freshmen: Lauryn Geary and Sarah Benjamin.  Additionally, last year’s 1st place winner, senior Lauren Tierney (Harvard class of 2013!) and freshman Katie Manning had articles published in this month’s “Teen Ink”, a national newspaper for students.

On Friday, May 29, 2009 the Athletic Department, through the Hull Boosters Club, will hold the Spring/Annual Sports Awards Ceremony in the gymnasium at Hull High School. The Spring Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and last for about an hour. There will be an intermission with light refreshments in the cafeteria, followed by the Annual Awards Ceremony that will begin promptly at 7:15 p.m.

The high school faculty and staff will be participating in a half-day professional development day on Tuesday, May 18, 2009. The high school faculty will be working on program assessments and improvements for the upcoming school year.  It is hoped that the incoming Principal, Mr. Michael Devine, will be able to attend and begin discussions with the faculty regarding the transition that will occur over the summer and at the beginning of the 2009 – 10 school year.  Parents should be reminded that their children will be released at 11:30 a.m.

As we move closer to graduation, Friday, May 22nd will be the last day of classes for the seniors.  The high school is planning to release the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at approximately 12:50 p.m. to allow for a senior - faculty BBQ.  Seniors in danger of not meeting graduation requirements or losing credit due to poor attendance have been notified.  Arrangements to make up unexcused absences and regain credit should already have been finalized with the high school administration.  In order to participate in graduation, seniors must have returned all books and paid any related fines or fees.  Due to the unacceptable behavior of the members of the Class of 2008 on their final day of school, any senior coming to school with any alcohol what so ever in their blood stream will be immediately suspended for ten days and sent to an expulsion hearing.  Community service will not be an option to secure the privilege of participating in the Graduation Ceremony.

The Hull Kids Committee, a student run organization will be holding two events in May. The first will be the "Walk for Votes" on Sunday May 10th, beginning at 11 a.m. at L St. Field. The Walk will be followed by a Rally from 1-3 p.m. The students are hoping to generate as many volunteers as possible, and everyone is welcome. The second event will be the "Rock the Vote" Expo on Wednesday May 13 from 6-8 p.m. in the Hull High School gymnasium. The Expo will showcase not only the programs at Hull High School that will be eliminated next year, but also other organizations in Hull that will be affected by next years budget cuts. The students would like to encourage every member of the community to join them at the Expo, as it is a chance to educate ones self about what the town has to lose. If you have any questions, you can e-mail the leader of the Hull Kids Committee, Mikia Manley, at mikia118@aol.com.

Each year, juniors from across the state are nominated to participate in a weekend workshop at Worchester Art Museum. Only 140 students are accepted after a long application and interview process. No students from Hull High have ever been accepted until this year! Aine Hegarty and Ryan Gallagher were happy to receive their letter of acceptance last week and are excited to gather with other juniors to create an instillation.  Each student is placed with a group of 10 students, mentor artists, empty room for the instillation, recycled materials, and a roommate where they share a dorm room at Clark College. It is a wonderful opportunity for teens to work in a group with other people who are the same caliber and as passionate about art as they are. We wish them the best of luck at All State.

In closing, I would encourage you to keep working with your children and the high school to ensure their continued success.

Sincerely,
Jonathan D. Ford

Senior Final Exam Schedule

Senior exams will be conducted in the cafeteria.  Seniors who will be taking more than one final exam in a subject area must make arrangements with their teachers to take their exam during an available testing period.  For example, if a student is not taking a Social Studies course and is enrolled in two Business courses, he/she should arrange to take one of his/her business exams during the Social Studies Exam Period.  If a student is absent for an exam, it is his/her responsibility to contact his/her teacher and request a make-up exam.  Supporting documentation will be required to schedule a make-up exam.  Senior grades close on Friday, May 29th.
