Welcome To Ms. Connolly's Kindergarten .
The Jacobs School Kindergarten is a full day kindergarten. We strive to be both academic as well as developmentally appropriate. The kindergarten curriculum includes literacy (reading and writing), math, science, social studies, and the arts.
Our reading program is entitled “Literacy Place” (from Scholastic). Both sight words as well as phonics are used as reading is taught. There are 18 "big books" along with smaller versions of each book in the reading program. The children will receive a photocopied version of each book to take home and "practice" reading to friends and family. Along with the Scholastic books we use a Guided Reading program. Leveled books (levels A, B, C, D) which gradually increase in degree of difficulty are used. There are 5 or 6 books in each level. We also use "Month-by Month Phonics" as a part of our literacy curriculum.
Our math program entitled "Everyday Math" gives children the opportunity to apply their math skils in everyday experiences. The children have their own workbooks along with 4 small take home books.
Our handwriting program is "Handwriting Without Tears". It incorporates music, mulit-sensory activities, and a workbook to teach the children to print the capital and lower case letters as well as the numerals. The children have a workbook in which to practice their printing skills. Also included in the program are small chalkboards to practice printing the letters and numerals.
As a part of our writing curriculum the children write in their journals. Through the use of "inventive spelling" (writing the letters of the sounds heard in the words) the children begin to develop their skills of composition. Writing is also incorporated into other aspects of the curriculum including math, science, and social studies.
Our new science program is Scott Foresman. The program includes life science, earth science, physical science, and space and technology. Hands-on experiences are the focus of the program as the children "learn by doing". Inquiry and discovery are the basic premises of the lessons.
In Social Studies curriculum addresses topics such as self-concept, holidays, the globe (land & water forms), and the community in which they live. The children will be introduced to the 50 states, the continents and the oceans. They will also have an opportunity to learn about and play musical instruments from around the world including djembe, digeridoo, marimba, tarca ,organ , rainstick , bodran, guiro and many more as we take a multi-cultural approach to learning.
