I teach guided reading daily to small groups of students reading text at their instructional reading level. Students will learn effective strategies for processing novel text at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty. The ultimate goal in guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies successfully.
Our mission as reading specialists is for all students to reach grade level benchmarks. We supplement classroom instruction and support struggling readers by teaching and modeling independent reading strategies. We strive to develop a love of reading in our students so that they become life-long readers.
In addition to daily instruction, it is critical that your child practice their reading at home. To make sure your child is matched with a "just right" book, we will be sending home books matched specifically to your child's reading level. It is critical that students read books at their independent and instructional levels to grow as readers. Each night, your child will be taking home a "take home" book in their reading bag. They are to bring it back the next day. Also, all grade one and two students participate in the home reading program called Wonderful Exciting Books (WEB). Weekly, students will select home reading books from the WEB library cart.
Thank you for participating in this home-school reading partnership. I look forward to meeting you and your child! If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 781-925-4400, X2149.
