Welcome!
My name is Mary Ellen Moran. I am a Reading Specialist at the Jacobs Elementary School. I teach Guided Reading daily to small groups of students reading text at their instructional reading level. Students wll learn effective strategies for processing novel text at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty. The ultimate goal in guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies successfully. Our mission as reading specialistsis for all students to reach grade level benchmarks. We supplement classroom instruction and support struggling readers by teaching and modeling independent reading strategies. We strive to develop a love of reading in our students so they become life long readers.
The instruction for each group is customized to meet the needs of the students. The groups focus on a combination of phonic and reading strategy instruction. The daily instruction and repetition helps to build mastery.The students meet daily for approximately for 30 minutes. In addition to daily instruction it is critical that your child practice their reading at hjome. To make sure your child is matched with a "just right book" we will be sending home books matched specifically to your child's reading level. It is critical that students read books at their independent/instructional levels to grow as readers. When books are too difficult students are not able to apply newly learned strategies to read text. each night your child will be taking home a
"Take Home Book" in their reading bag. They are to bring it back the next day. We need the home-school reading partnership to be strong in order to grow your child as quickly as possible to reach grade level benchmarks. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 781-925-4400 (x2207).
