WELCOME TO
MRS. REARDON'S READING CLASS
P roficient readers use active reading strategies to improve their reading comprehension. After guided practice, readers begin to internalize these strategies and apply them automatically. I will be working with the students at Memorial Middle School to model active reading strategies and to guide students’ practice. We will practice monitoring comprehension, previewing, activating prior knowledge, making predictions, making connections, generating questions, visualizing, making inferences, determining importance, summarizing, synthesizing.
Strategies will be practiced within Reading/Writing Strategy classes, content area classes, and small group instruction. Reading selections will include picture books read aloud in class, non-fiction articles, short passages from textbooks/novels, short stories, and novels.
All students should be reading independent reading material for at least 20 minutes each night. Just as athletes practice their sport and musicians practice with their instrument/voice, readers must practice to become more proficient. People are motivated to read material which is personally engaging and interesting. Reading material your child may find most interesting could include a fantasy novel, a sports magazine, a popular series book, the newspaper, or a comic book. Experiment with different types of genres and allow your child to discover what he/she loves to read.
