General Information
I'm looking forward to a very exciting year. We will be using Prentice Hall Math Mathematics Course 3 for 7th grade and Prentice Hall Algebra I for 8th grade this year. I expect our students to work very hard and be very successful. Students will be working individually and in groups to discover mathematical solutions as they make sense of the given situations.
Basic Class Rules
1. RESPECT yourself and others.
2. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your own education.
Required each day for class
Pencils (2, sharpened)
Binder (with dividers and extra paper) (Graph paper for home use will help with many assignments.)
Planner
It's also a good idea to have a simple calculator, a compass and a protractor for home and school use.
Homework
Almost every night students will have math homework. It will be due at the beginning of the next class. If there are extenuating circumstances at home, please write a note to excuse your child. I will keep these notes on file. Any missed homework will be due the next day. It is my hope that parents will stress the importance of making academic work a priority.
Absentee work will be due after your child returns to school, following school policy. If your child has a "study buddy" that they can call for an assignment when they have been absent, it will help a great deal. You may check on the homework assignment by calling 781-925-2040. Then enter 2238, and follow directions. I will also try to list all assignments on the Internet. (http://www.town.hull.ma.us Go to Hull Schools, then Memorial Middle School, then Grade Level Teams, then Grade 7 or 8, then Laura Tannuzzo.)
Grading Policy
Grades will be based on a combination of tests, quizzes, homework, binder, supplies and participation.
What can parents do?
1. Help your children learn the basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. A nightly drill with a progress chart can work wonders. Try APlusMath.com for practice.
2. Encourage your child to think through a problem. Most mathematical situations have several solutions.
3. Please don’t give your child an excuse for not trying by saying, “I was never good at math either.” Parents are very important role models for their children. It would be far better to say, “Math is like a puzzle. If you listen in class, and work hard, you will get the answer.”
4. Finally, and most importantly, keep in touch with us. If problems are developing please let our team know while they are still in the manageable stage. We all want the same thing: a quality education for your child.
Memorial Middle School phone number is (781) 925-2040. (My extension is 2238.)
